The Research Behind These Chord Progressions
In 2022, I analyzed over 2,000 successful songs, focusing on what makes today’s hits different from those of the past. The results uncovered patterns shaping modern music that are now embedded in this MIDI pack.
And no, it’s NOT the Axis chord progression. It’s not the overused "I - V - VIm - IV" you’ve heard a thousand times before.
Sure, you may still find one or two hit songs with that chord progression, but that's not what I'm talking about here.
In 2025, I revisited the top 50 songs on Spotify and found that 45% of them used one of the EXACT chord progressions I had created in 2022. This proves that the trends identified three years ago are shaping today’s music.
What You’ll Get in the MIDI Pack
There are 90 chord progressions, separated into four groups:
- Chord progressions you can use in Verses, Pre-Choruses, and Choruses.
- Chord progressions you can use only in Pre-Choruses and Choruses.
- Chord progressions you can use only in Pre-Choruses.
- Chord progressions you can use only in Choruses.
Here are a few examples of how you can combine these (there are much more combinations than you would think at first):
- You can take a chord progression from the first group, and use it in the entire song (verse, pre-chorus, chorus).
- You can take two or three chord progressions from the first group, and use them in different parts of the song.
- You can use a chord progression from the first group for the verse, and use chord progressions from the other groups for the other parts of the song.
